DELL REFRESH LOCKOUT
01/07/06

A few days ago I got several emails from users complaining that they got a warning message from Dell Outlet for refreshing too quickly using my zero-delay script. I investigated the issue and here are my conclusions:

If you run the script on ONE browser window with zero delay between refreshes you will NOT see any problems. I tested several hours of refreshing on my machine which is quite fast and has a very quick internet connection without failure. If you run ONLY ONE browser window you are guaranteed not to have problems

Running two or more browser refresh windows is a risk, especially if you have a fast computer + internet connection. You may see warnings after several minutes from Dell for refreshing too quickly.

IF YOU HAVE A FAST MACHINE AND INTERNET CONNECTION I recommend you use only one browser window running the script. You can try to add a second one but you may see problems. It all depends on your latency.

IF YOU HAVE A SLOW MACHINE AND/OR INTERNET CONNECTION you should be running several browser windows. How many depends on your slowness.

I have updated the DellScripts.cfg link to again contain the zero delay script. I have added a new link to the 2 sec delay script just for reference. You should almost certainly be using the zero delay script. If you downloaded the delay script then switch over to the zero delay.

If you run into any problems or issues please let me know.

NEW FIX FOR DELAY WARNING

I just got an interesting email from T. Messersmith about Dell Outlet speed refresh warning messages:

Now the only problem is it refreshes too fast and Dell has the
"WARNING:
You are disruptively hitting our Dell Factory Outlet web servers too fast, please slow down your incoming HTTP requests to our web servers.
Thank you for your cooperation." I was wondering if there was a proxomitron pause command I could use for DellOutlet5 code that would pause it to every second?

It appears that after extended periods of rapid refreshing, Dell Outlet detects that you are using automated means to refresh their site and locks you out. The solution here is to put a Javascript delay in Rule#5, the refresh rule. I have changed the replacement text in Rule#5 in the config file to show the following:

self.setTimeout('window.document.thisForm.submit()',2000);
This will delay two seconds before refreshing the page. I am not certain that a two second delay will be adequate to avoid the refresh detection. On the other hand, it may be excessive. Please try delays of one second or less by adjusting the "2000" figure (it represents timeout in MS). If you get a chance please email me with your results. I'll post back in a couple of days, hopefully we can figure out the minimum timeout necessary to not see that warning message.

NEW PROXOMITRON GUIDE

What up peeps,

I finally got around to updating my Dell Proxomitron Guide. This new version comes complete with a slick new website and my own TLD. Several months ago Dell reworked their Outlet site, rendering the old guide useless and causing 90% of the nubs on the internet to send me whiny email. ATTENTION NUBS: Ninjak's Dell Outlet Proxomitron Guide is back and better than ever. Can you say "instant page refresh"?

Check out the tutorial here -- NEW DELL OUTLET PROXOMITRON GUIDE.

If you're a smarty genius then skip the whole tutorial and go straight to the summary -- DELL OUTLET PROXOMITRON SUMMARY.

Major improvements from last release:

  • Faster refresh time, ~~.5 secs/refresh/browser.
  • Adds items to cart before popup msg - no longer do you have to wait at the comp all day for the popup.
  • URL command used to filter only Dell Outlet page, no more refreshing Google all day.
  • Better tutorial now with pictures.
  • Much much more.

If you have any questions or suggestions then please drop me an email.
